I A Toobox Approach to Residential Tiaffic Management

T hroughout the United States, citizens are asking their city traffic engineers to reduce “excessive” cut-through traffic and speeding cars on their local streets. A recent ZTE Journal article noted an “epidemic” of street closure requests,’ and many recent ITE articles have dealt with aspects of neighborhood traffic control. More and more, city and county traffic engineers must shift their attention from highly congested arterials to the relatively lowvolume local streets to address residents’ concerns about traffic safety on the streets where they live. While there are many books and articles on calming traffic in residential neighborhoods, researching, evaluating and presenting viable options to a specific neighborhood group is time consuming. This article presents one approach to organizing, presenting and comparing options for managing traffic in residential areas.
